Strengthening Hope Learners Benefit
While it’s true that an education opens doors for jobs and training, the financial costs of caring for a baby can deter some young parents from pursuing an education.
At Catholic Family Service, we believe that being a parent should not be a barrier to getting an education. This is why we partner with the Government of Alberta to help students who are registered at the Louise Dean Centre (LDC) to access provincial funding. Our financial assistance specialist at LDC works closely with students to determine their financial needs and liaises with the team of professionals at LDC to support and monitor students’ progress.
Financial assistance is available to students that are registered in full-time studies September to June and/or while attending summer school. To receive and maintain funding, students must demonstrate the following:
- registered full time at Louise Dean Centre (LDC);
- pregnant or parenting between 16 – 20 years of age at the time of application;
- completed a learning plan (school staff will assist students in creating a learning plan);
- enrolled and maintaining 15 credits per semester;
- achieve minimum attendance rate of 80 per cent; and
- meet acceptable progress in courses as determined by the school.
Financial assistance is made available to meet the specific needs that young parents have when it comes to high school completion, so they create a more promising future for themselves and their families.
The Louise Dean Centre is a partnership between Catholic Family Service, Calgary Board of Education and Alberta Health Services. Louise Dean Centre provides expecting and parenting teens, their children and families with educational and health care support, as well as helping them deal with the emotional and social needs that come with pregnancy and parenting.
