In some families, children and teens experience serious problems in school, truancy and even interactions with the criminal justice system. Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is an evidence-based program for families of youth, aged 7 to 18 years old, who are dealing with complex problems like delinquency, mental health concerns, criminal involvement, substance abuse and violence.
The FFT counsellor works with the family to assess and change interactions that are contributing to the problem. The program helps family members learn new skills and better connect with one another. As a result, families:
- Increase communication skills
- Build trust and respect
- Negotiate more effectively
- Learn supportive parenting behaviours
- Establish clear rules about privileges and responsibilities
- Strengthen family relationships
- Increase appropriate supervision
FFT is offered in partnership between Catholic Family Service and carya (formally Calgary Family Services). Together, we are committed to providing seamless service, including a common intake process. Families can call one number to access a counsellor at either agency.
