“I saw the Families & Schools Together flyer at the school and, as a single mom, thought, “Oh, I wouldn’t have to cook dinner one night a week!” It ended up being way more than that. The boys were in Grades 2, 3 and 5 that year. We have a very chaotic life, so for one night a week we just focused on the four of us. I have always believed that it takes a village to raise a child; well, with F&ST I expanded my village. Now I go to events at the school and people think I work there. I can’t go to Walmart without seeing someone we have met through F&ST. When they asked me to be a parent partner the next year, it was a no brainer. When I took the training, I saw the research behind the program and just fell in love with the concept. Our whole struggle has been tough, but I’m slowly getting my life back on track. F&ST has brought me out of my shell. We have become closer as a family and I have become a better mom. If I had my way, F&ST would spread across Canada. It should be in every school.”
