“When I first met Catholic Family Service 20 years ago, I was a new social planner with the City of Calgary’s Family and Community Support Services. CFS had approached us for funding for the Families and Schools Together (F&ST) program. They wanted to bring this program to Calgary and Canada for the first time. I remember that F&ST was such a breath of fresh air. It approached family support and child development from a strength-based and asset-building approach, rather than the traditional problem identification and service provision approach. I was deeply drawn into it and helped provide FCSS funding for the inception of F&ST in Canada. Last year, I was invited to the F&ST 20th anniversary celebration, where I met David, one of the first graduates of the program back in 1996. He’s now a student at St. Mary’s University. It was surreal in a way. It was one of those rare moments in life when you see the full impact of a program that you were fortunate to be able to support from the beginning. Good things don’t happen by accident. I feel fortunate to have worked with two outstanding leaders at Catholic Family Service – Greg Campbell and Patricia Jones, the former and current CEO. It takes generations of leaders and committed staff to make a program like this succeed.”
