“My mom came to Canada from the Philippines in 2011. My dad and I followed in 2015. I had already graduated from high school in the Philippines, but here I went into Grade 11. After the first school year, I went on vacation to the Philippines. My friends and my boyfriend were there. While I was in the Philippines, I got pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant, I just stopped going to school. My mind was thinking a lot of things. But my English teacher was very close to me and she asked me how I was doing. I said, “Sorry, I was afraid to tell you that I got engaged and I am pregnant.” My teacher said, “Don’t worry, I will help you.” My mom also went to the school to tell them my situation. The school helped us meet Eloida from Catholic Family Service’s Multicultural School Support Program. At first, I was not sure if the program could help me. Sometimes people think I am rude because I am quiet and I don’t talk to many people because of my English. But when I started talking to Eloida, it was very helpful for me. She gave me many options, like to study, to work or to study while working. She made sure I got the support I needed in my pregnancy. She helped prepare me to be a mom and to not be discouraged. I can’t imagine where I’d be right now without her. Eloida is like a guardian angel to us.”
