“This photo was taken in 1998, the year I was a parent volunteer for Families & Schools Together. The program was just getting started in Calgary and the principal at Blessed Damien School (now St. Damien School) asked me to volunteer. Actually, I had no idea what to expect. I just said sure, I’d get involved. I learned that lots of families, through no fault of their own, didn’t have what I always took for granted because of my own upbringing. F&ST opened my naïve little eyes. F&ST is a very simple, loving, sincere program that helps families feel good no matter where they are at. It helps them know that, even if things aren’t perfect, it is going to be all right. F&ST was just one of many great volunteer experiences for me while my kids were in school. When our oldest started kindergarten, the school said they needed a chair for the parent advisory committee – they said it wasn’t a lot of work! Well, 21 years later I just attended my final school council meeting because our youngest is graduating this year. She’s going to Mount Royal University – I’m sure I’ll find some way to get involved there, too.”
