2020 UP Gala Postponed

In line with The City of Calgary’s decision to cancel all public events up to June 30, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone the UP Gala. We have not yet set a new date but are assessing the situation and are committed to gathering with you in some way this year—we couldn’t imagine missing that! We will announce a new date when we have one.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us through the uncertainty of these days. Please know that your support and commitment to building strong families make every difference to our team and to the people we serve.

If you have a question or concern, please contact Tara Horsley, Lead – Community Relations, at 403.205.8528 or tara.horsley@cfs-ab.org.

Questions You May Have

Make sure any guests you’ve invited know the event has been postponed, but apart from that, nothing. We’ll keep you informed about the UP Gala, especially once we’ve set a new date.

Yes, of course. Please contact Tara Horsley, Lead – Community Relations, at 403.205.8528 or tara.horsley@cfs-ab.org.

We also know that being out of work and the resulting financial stress can be overwhelming. Our Rapid Access Counselling service is delivered using Zoom, a secure online video-conferencing tool. If you’re feeling anxious, depressed, or struggling with this whole situation, please consider booking an appointment at booksinglesession.cfs-ab.org/.

We’ll be reaching out to all our sponsors directly to check-in, and you can expect to hear from us. If you need to speak with someone urgently, please contact Tara Horsley, Lead – Community Relations, at 403.205.8528 or tara.horsley@cfs-ab.org.

How can we support you?

The measures helping to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus come at a high price, both socially and economically. We know many of you may be experiencing new challenges. As you have generously supported us, please let us know how we can support you and your family. You can

Can you help?

We continue to do everything we can to maintain a supportive presence to Calgarians. That said, we have not been untouched by the economic situation in Alberta. Even as more people are reaching out to us for support, we have seen cuts to funding and grants, and the postponed UP Gala is our largest fundraising event. If you can help, please consider a donation. You can make a donation through our website, www.cfs-ab.org/give/donate/, or contact Tara Horsley, Lead – Community Relations, at 403.205.8528 or tara.horsley@cfs-ab.org.

Thank you for helping us build strong families!

About the UP Gala

For the past ten years, the UP Gala has been the premier fundraising event to support the innovative work and programs of Catholic Family Service.

Last year’s UP & Away Charity Gala exceeded its goal of $350,000! Your contribution means more high school graduates and a new site for the Never Too Late program in Calgary. Thank you so much!

Our 2020 Gala is celebrating the 50-year partnership between Catholic Family Service and the Calgary Board of Education at the Louise Dean Centre for pregnant and parenting teenagers and young adults. Gala proceeds will support our new Fathers Moving Forward program at Louise Dean Centre. Fathers Moving Forward ensures young dads have the skills and confidence they need to be involved, hands-on parents and positive role models for their child(ren).

For more information, please contact Tara Horsley, Interim Lead – Community Relations at 403.205.8528 or by email at tara.horsley@cfs-ab.org.

If you would like to support the UP Gala but are unable to attend the event, please consider donating. Click on the tickets button above, and when the form loads, select “I would like to make a donation.”

Jamil Jivani – 2020 UP Gala Speaker

We are excited to announce Jamil Jivani, lawyer, educator and author as the 2020 UP Gala Speaker.

Jamil Jivani grew up in a mostly immigrant community in Toronto, where he was nearly lost to feelings of hopelessness, anger, and hate. At 16 years old, he was labelled illiterate by the public school system. But, Jamil turned his life around with the support of role models and mentors. He went on to graduate from Yale Law School, teach at Osgoode Hall Law School, and dedicate his career to supporting youth facing challenges like he did growing up. Jamil’s work has taken him all over the world, from Belgium and Egypt, where he studied ways to help young men escape the influence of terrorist groups, to Ohio, where he partnered with JD Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy, to help solve America’s opioid crisis. Jamil’s leadership has been recognized with awards from many organizations, including the International Development and Relief Foundation, Yale University, and York University. Most recently, at 31 years old, Jamil survived a fight with stage IV cancer, which gave him even greater insights into how people can overcome adversity. His first book, Why Young Men: The Dangerous Allure of Violent Movements and What We Can Do About It, was published in 2019.

Jamil works to create opportunities and remove barriers for youth and their parents. His personal experience and his research will shed light on the significant benefit to families, children, and young men themselves when we ensure they are included, supported, held accountable, and empowered.
