Teen mothers at Louise Dean Centre will continue to have access to delicious, affordable food, thanks to Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink.

Funds raised by Catholic Family Service (CFS) through the 2018 Birdies for Kids campaign have been matched by the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation for a grand total of $64,000.

Many students attending the Centre – a partnership between Catholic Family Service, Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and Alberta Health Services that supports youth who are expecting a child or parenting – face significant financial barriers that affect their ability to provide nutritious food for their families.

This donation will fund breakfast, lunch, after school and evening meals at Louise Dean Centre, allowing young parents to focus more fully on their education and parenting responsibilities.

Representatives from Birdies for Kids, CFS and CBE, as well as a number of students and their babies, gathered for breakfast November 6 to celebrate this fundraising achievement.

“We could not provide wrap-around services for these young families without generous supporters like those who donated through Birdies for Kids,” said Catholic Family Service Board Chair Mike Theroux.

Dianne Yee, CBE’s Area 4 Director, said the partnership at Louise Dean Centre has thrived for a remarkable 48 years.

“A great partnership generates great community interest,” Dianne said. “The generosity of our Calgary community is so important and so appreciated by us. This morning is another wonderful example of that.”

Sherry Hiebert-Keck, Managing Director, Catholic Family Service at Louise Dean Centre, and Helen Colbourne, Principal at Louise Dean Centre, said having nutritious food available to young moms and their children is essential to their success.

“With the help of Birdies for Kids, we can provide food at no cost or at a very low cost to the expectant and parenting young moms and their families at Louise Dean Centre,” Sherry said.

“Thank you for building strong families in Calgary.”
