Families and Schools Together (F&ST) Program admin
Feeling connected and part of a community has a big impact on our quality of life. The ties that bind and make us strong go beyond just our immediate families. Relationships with friends and neighbours, schools, teachers, coaches, etc. are just as important to our health and well-being.
Since 1996, Catholic Family Service has been connecting families with their schools and communities through the Families and Schools Together Program (F&ST). F&ST is a world-renowned family skills program that supports each member of the family to be the best they can be – at home, at school and in the community.
In 2010, The United Nations rated F&ST number 11 in the world, out of 150 evidence-based family skills programs.
What makes F&ST unique is that parents are given the support they need to be positive role models within their family and the community. Throughout the program parents are empowered to:
be leaders and role models for their family;
be involved in their child’s school; and
ensure their children are healthy and thriving both socially and academically.
F&ST is delivered by Catholic Family Service in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District. Here’s how it works:
F&ST: 10 – 12 families get together weekly for nine weeks at their child’s school. Both parents and their children attend the meetings, with support from school staff and a social worker. Families make connections with other families, while parents develop and practice positive parenting and leadership skills.
F&STWORKS: Building on the knowledge and skills developed in F&ST, F&STWORKS continues to strengthen families by fostering ongoing relationships with the other F&ST families and increasing participation with the school. Through F&STWORKS, families transition to monthly parent-led groups in the community for up to one year.
