Mentoring is a powerful way to connect with young people. In fact, research shows that consistent interaction with a mentor increases the likelihood of high school completion and success in life.

Since 1999, Catholic Family Service has offered the Athletes Mentoring program which combines sports with mentorship as a unique way to engage young people and promote high school completion. Athletes Mentoring is not designed to develop athletic skills, but rather uses a safe group setting of team practices as a place where mentoring can occur. For one-and-a-half hours each week, youth age 10 – 14, along with student athletes from Calgary’s universities and colleges get together to talk, cultivate friendships, learn new skills and have fun.

The Athletes Mentoring Program (AMP) is an award-winning program offered at post-secondary institutions. The program combines both group and one-on-one mentoring. Group activities include semi-structured time for physical activity and structured one-on-one activities with a focus on enhancing self-esteem and social skills.

We Put the Team in Teamwork

This program is not just for the young – parents play an integral role in AMP. Whether it’s through home visits or discussions with program staff, parents help set the stage for their son or daughter’s experience. We like to think of parents as our home-base partners – who share insights about their child’s strengths and challenges, help set goals, monitor progress and, of course, celebrate their accomplishments.

Mentoring is a Win-Win

Volunteer mentors develop leadership and communication skills, as well as a sense of satisfaction knowing they played a role in helping build self-esteem and confidence in a young person’s life.

Recently, a mother reported that her son had started doing more homework and engaging in the classroom because his mentor told him that he had to work very hard to get where he wants to be – and that work starts with school.
