Fact: Many pregnant women do not have access to prenatal health care, social support and proper nutrition during pregnancy, resulting in babies born with low birth weight.

The Healthy Babies Network is about making sure babies have a healthy start in life. The HBN is made up of service providers and community-based organizations across Calgary. Member agencies share a common goal of optimizing maternal and infant health. The role of the HBN is to provide information and support among member agencies to ensure quality pre- and post-natal care for women who may face barriers to healthy pregnancies.

The role of Catholic Family Service (CFS) is two-fold:

  1. Serve as a coordinating body for the Healthy Babies Network.
  2. Registered Dietitians provide clinical assessment, referral and consultations to member agencies and their clients. This function is provided one-on-one, in groups, and through workshops.

Who is eligible for services provided by the Healthy Babies Network?

Pregnant and parenting women with children up to the age of 12 months who are at risk of having a low birth weight baby including immigrant women, Aboriginal women, adolescent women and women who have had a previous low birth weight baby.
