Volunteer Opportunities

 

Teen Parent Friend – Mentor and Community Connector

 

Role:

 

Volunteers with the Teen Parent Friend act as mentors to young parents (ages 15-22).

Volunteers listen to, support and encourage the young parents, thereby reducing feelings of stress and isolation. Volunteers also support young parents in getting more connected to services and resources in their community.

 

Commitment:

 

Two to three hours per week for 6 months.
Volunteers and young parents determine mentoring dates, times and locations

Families & Schools Together

 

Role:

 

Families & Schools Together (F&ST) is a short-term, preventative school-based program aimed at strengthening bonds between parents and children and between families and their school. Volunteers are responsible for aiding in preparing and serving a meal to families, child care, and some set up and clean up. This is a great opportunity for friends/families to volunteer together.

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is from 4:30-8:30 p.m., one evening per week for eight weeks.
Programs begin in the fall, winter and spring in various elementary schools throughout the city.
Orientation and training provided.

 

Baby Families & Schools Together Program

 

Role:

 

Baby F&ST is similar to F&ST, but operates out of the Louise Dean Centre for pregnant and parenting teens. Instead of working with families of elementary age children, volunteers work with young parents and their babies. Volunteer responsibilities are the same as the F&ST program, but volunteers have the additional role of cuddling babies.

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is from 4-8 p.m., one evening per week for eight weeks.
Programs begin in the fall and spring at the Louise Dean School (Kensington).
Orientation and training provided.

 

Families & Schools Together Program – Prevention Partner

 

Role:

 

Families & Schools Together (F&ST) is a short-term, preventative school-based program aimed at strengthening bonds between parents and children and between families and their school. In this leadership volunteer role, volunteers coach parents through activities aimed at strengthening family and community relationships. Volunteers also lead one F&ST activity on substance abuse, directing other team members to coach families. Leading/supporting children’s activities is also a key part of this role. Experience in the helping field is required for this role.

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is from 4:30-8:30 p.m., one evening per week for eight weeks.
Programs begin in the fall, winter and spring in various elementary schools throughout the city.
Orientation and training provided.

 

Athletes Mentoring Program – Facilitator

 

Role:

 

The Athletes Mentoring Program pairs varsity athletes on the University of Calgary, SAIT, and Mount Royal University Men’s and Women’s basketball and volleyball teams with children and youth (age 7-17). Matches meet once a week for group activities. Volunteer role is to plan and facilitate fun, high energy, relationship building activities in a classroom setting.

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is one evening per week during the athletic season (September to March), and prep work as needed by the chosen activity.
Orientation and training provided.

 

Louise Dean Centre / CACY Cuddling Program

 

Role:

 

Catholic Family Service provides complete child care for the infants of parenting teens attending school at Louise Dean and the Calgary Achievement Centre for Youth (CACY). We recruit volunteers to help with cuddling and playing with babies aged 2-18 months.

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is at least two hours per week; length of commitment is negotiable but must be at least six months.
Volunteer site is Louise Dean School in Kensington or CACY in the downtown core.
Orientation and training provided.

  

IT Support Volunteer

 

Role:

 

Volunteers support the IT team at Catholic Family Service by answering staff help desk requests and preparing and facilitating lunch and learns about various Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge and experience with various Windows operating systems is required for this role.

Kids Play Volunteer

 

Role:

 

To reduce as many barriers as possible for parents attending various groups, Catholic Family Service provides support for children during group meetings. Volunteers play with kids, using their own activities or activities from CFS staff. Cuddling babies may also be a part of this role. 

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is approximately two to three hours on a monthly basis (times and commitment can vary, depending on group).
Groups are offered during the day, in the evening and on weekends at various locations throughout Calgary.
Orientation and training provided.

 

Butterfly Program Volunteer

 

Role:

 

Catholic Family Service provides counselling and community support services tailored to meet the specific needs of the Deaf and hard of hearing. Volunteers fluent in ASL provide either one-on-one mentoring or facilitation support to groups for deaf and hard of hearing kids in schools. Level 3 ASL is required for these volunteer roles.

 

Commitment:

 

One to two hours per week for approximately six months.
School-based support is during weekdays; mentoring can happen anytime depending on client and mentor schedules.
Orientation and training provided.

 

Done-In-A-Day Volunteer Opportunities

 

Role:

 

We have a number of short-term volunteer opportunities that allow corporations, businesses, families and small groups to volunteer together. These include capital projects such as painting and landscaping, as well as direct service to clients such as helping with family picnics. Please contact us if you are interested in a "Done in a Day" project, or if you have an idea for a short-term project you'd like to take on for our agency.

 

Commitment:

 

Volunteer commitment is less than one day on most projects, although some projects may extend to three to five days.

 

Emergency Call List

 

Role:

 

Volunteers on the Emergency Call List are called by Catholic Family Service staff on short notice to volunteer with programs when they're "in a pinch." For example, you may be called to substitute for another volunteer who has committed to providing child care for an evening program.

 

Commitment:

Volunteer commitment is very short term.
