Multicultural Program

Newcomers to Canada are often not prepared for the differences between life in Canada and their native country in terms of lifestyle, clothing, religious expression, holiday celebrations, food and other cultural experiences. Catholic Family Service can help immigrants and refugees to adapt to their new Canadian home and balance their traditions with those they will experience here in Canada.

We can help newcomers:

  • adjust to life in school, at home and at work
  • deal with depression, stress and anxiety
  • address issues specific to language, culture, mixed marriages and intergenerational parent-child conflict
  • deal with traumatic experiences

Wherever possible, we provide professional counselling in the client’s first language or with an interpreter. To ask about the languages we can support, call us at 403-233-2360.

Family and Youth Sexual Abuse Treatment

When children and youth become victims of sexual abuse, the damaging effects have an impact not only on the child, but on the whole family as well. That impact can carry on throughout their lives. That is why Catholic Family Service goes beyond just treating the individual. We encourage the entire family to be involved in the treatment process through a combination of individual, group and family treatment.

Clients are referred by Children and Youth Services, which also receives reports on the progress of the child and the family. The treatment program is based on current research, as well as practices that have been proven to be effective in treating children and youth. Although the family is involved, treatment focuses on the protection and empowerment of the victim.
