Catholic Family Service is happy to announce that Marriage Preparation is still running, and we continue to register new couples. Following the current recommendations around group gatherings, we will be delivering each Marriage Preparation weekend virtually through zoom. When group gatherings are deemed safe again, we will return to in-person sessions.

All couples who register for the virtual delivery of Marriage Prep will receive their workbooks in the mail and will be supported in the use of Zoom technology. If there are any further questions, please contact Stephen Robinson at We look forward to engaging with you online.

In partnership with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, Catholic Family Service (CFS) offers a Marriage Preparation Weekend to couples preparing for the sacrament of marriage. The word sacrament is defined as “a sign of the sacred,” which means that couples are encouraged to model their marriage on Christ’s love. Over the course of a weekend, participants take a time-out from wedding planning to developing practical tools that will create a lifelong, happy marriage, including:

  • understanding marriage as a sacrament and spirituality in marriage;
  • enhancing communication and managing conflict;
  • identifying shared and non-shared values, and negotiating differences; and
  • managing finances as a married couple.

The Marriage Preparation Weekend is led by non-judgmental, professional facilitators who are well versed in their areas of expertise. The program is grounded in Catholic values and is open to couples of all faiths and cultural backgrounds.

Locations will be posted as they are confirmed. Please feel free to either register right away or to wait until those locations are available. If you have any questions, please contact Stephen Robinson at or 587.896.2891.

My fiancé is in another country. We will not be together until shortly before the wedding. Can I take the course here and he/she in that country?2019-08-26T14:19:32+00:00

No. The program we use at CFS requires couples to be together so they can work through the questions discussed in class. However, there is an online program designed for just this situation. Call the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, at 403-218-5505, and explain your situation. They will set you up for this alternate program.

What is the time commitment for the marriage preparation weekend?2019-08-26T14:30:45+00:00

The CFS program involves 10.5 hours of participation. The times are: Friday evening from 7-9, Saturday from 9 to 12:30 and 2-4, and Sunday from 1:30-4:30.

Is a lunch provided?2019-08-26T14:31:09+00:00

No. The schedule allows 1.5 hours at lunch time on Saturday for couples to go out to eat. You may also bring your own lunch and remain in the facility. We do, however, provide snacks and drinks, including coffee, throughout the weekend.

Can I change weekends if something comes up for us?2019-08-26T14:28:20+00:00

Changing weekends can be done, without a fee, by calling the main office at 403.223.2360 and requesting a change to another weekend.

Can we still get the certificate if we are not able to attend the whole weekend?2019-08-26T14:30:29+00:00

This is something to discuss with the Marriage Preparation Coordinator, Stephen Robinson, at or 587.896.2891. We would usually make provision for you to take the missing portion of the program on a different weekend.

What if my fiancé and I cannot attend the weekend together?2019-08-26T14:20:30+00:00

Call the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, at 403.218.5505, and explain your situation. They will set you up for an alternate program.

Where should we take marriage preparation if we are getting married in another province or country?2019-08-26T14:18:54+00:00

You can do the marriage preparation program in the diocese where you currently live. Once the documentation package is complete, the priest or deacon working with you will submit it to the local diocese for approval, from where it will be sent to the diocese where you are getting married.

Does the Catholic Family Service marriage course satisfy the requirement to get married in the Catholic Church?2019-08-26T14:16:54+00:00

Yes! CFS has been providing marriage preparation for the Catholic Diocese of Calgary for over 50 years. The certificate you receive at the end of the weekend will satisfy the requirement for couples to attend a marriage preparation program and to be married in a Catholic ceremony.

What is the cost for the weekend?2019-08-26T14:30:51+00:00

The fee for the program is $225 per couple. For difficult financial situations, provision may sometimes be made for a reduced fee.

Do we take the weekend course first or do we contact our parish first?2019-08-26T14:17:47+00:00

It does not make any difference which you do first. However, the strong recommendation is that, six to twelve months before your wedding date, you contact a Catholic Church where you attend mass OR near where you live. They will set up a meeting with you and a priest or deacon from the parish. One of the documents you will be asked for at that time is the marriage preparation completion certificate. If you have it already, you can provide it at that time. If not, you can submit it to the parish whenever you take the program.

What do we need to bring with us to the sessions?2019-08-26T14:31:03+00:00

Not a thing. The manual and any materials or handouts are provided at the time of registration or during the weekend. We will have pens if you don’t bring your own.
