Children and youth have long been attracted to the fun and excitement that sport has to offer. For some young people at risk, sport can be a way to reach them. With that in mind, Catholic Family Service started the Athletes Mentoring Program (AMP) in 1999 to develop one-on-one mentoring relationships between school-aged children and student athletes from Calgary’s universities and colleges.
This award-winning program pairs volunteer athletes who are usually between 18 and 24 years of age and attending a post-secondary school, with children and youth over a six-month program. Children benefit from positive interaction with talented student athletes who also develop leadership skills though their involvement. This program is not designed to develop sports skills, but rather uses the safe, group setting of team practices as a place where mentoring can occur.
